Harvests & honey

Record each harvest so that come winter you can see which hives earned their keep and trace every batch back to its source.

Recording a harvest

Open the hive you took honey from and tap Record harvest under Honey.

FieldWhat it means
DateWhen the honey was harvested. Defaults to today.
Amount (kg)Net weight of honey taken from this hive. Required.
VarietyThe forage source, e.g. spring blossom, forest, heather.
Water content (%)Your refractometer reading.
Batch no.Your label for the jarring batch, to trace jars back to source.
Best beforeThe date you print on the jars.
NoteAnything else: taste, set, where it was extracted.

You can log more than one harvest per hive per year, for example a spring crop and a summer crop.

:::tip Water content matters Honey should generally be below about 18% water before it is sold or stored long-term; above roughly 20% it risks fermenting. Recording the reading here lets you spot a damp batch before it spoils. Thresholds and labelling rules vary by country, so check your local requirements. :::

Where harvests show up

  • The Honey section on the hive page lists each harvest and shows the hive's total in its heading.
  • Development on the hive page charts the harvests over time.
  • The Honey this season tile on the Overview sums the harvests recorded in the current year.

A harvest stores the hive, the apiary and the queen whose reign covered the harvest date. Requeening or moving the hive later does not change what an earlier harvest is attributed to.
